There are a few truly iconic pu-erhs that not only gained legendary status but also inspired entire genres of their own. For instance, the 1999 Green Big Tree set a trend, leading to many pu-erhs featuring a green big tree on their wrappers. Similarly, the 2005 Meng Ku “Mother Tree” cake introduced the exceptional quality of Bing Dao tea to the broader tea world, sparking a wave of “mother tree” productions from various factories and years.
The “Bai Cai” family was a series of special-order productions commissioned by a Hong Kong tea merchant from the Menghai Tea Factory between 2000 and 2004. These cakes featured a distinctive organic-produce mark on their wrappers, which, at first glance, resembled a cabbage! This unique series was notable for almost exclusively using mao cha sourced from the Ban Zhan region, adding to its exceptional quality and character. Little Cabbage (Xiao Bai Cai) refers to those in the 200g to 250g, and Big Cabbage (Da Bai Cai) refers to those > 357g.
Tasting Notes: we had offered this 200g cakes on Hou De many years ago – and they were well-known for their solid, dynamic, and almost punchy character! Over time, they’ve matured beautifully, becoming highly enjoyable while still maintaining their robust, full-bodied nature. The tea is highly fragrant, clean, and free of any smokiness, with a pure dried storage profile. Loooong lasting after taste!
It’s quite challenging to locate genuineBai Cai, whether the Big (400g) or Little (250g or 200g) versions, as well as reliable reference prices. This is one example I found in Taiwan, with the price listed in Taiwan dollars:
